Idea 23

A covered walkway

This new proposal builds on the two previous ideas related to the market hall. Together, they form a comprehensive approach to make the hall more open, more inviting, and better adapted to the rhythm of the market throughout the year.

With Idea 23, we focus especially on comfort and weather protection – to make the surroundings of the hall pleasant both in summer and off-season.

A covered walkway along the eastern side of the hall

As part of the renovation of the market hall, built in 1957, we propose creating a permanent, solid covered walkway on the eastern side of the hall. It would begin roughly in the middle of this facade and extend towards the centre of the market.

This structure would be stable, well integrated, and designed as a true complement to the market.

“A modern and vibrant engine for the future of the market.”

What would this walkway provide?

  • Shade in summer
Visitors could stroll more comfortably, vendors would work in better conditions, and the overall welcome would improve.
  • Protection from wind and rain
Especially important during the shoulder seasons. People would stay longer – and most importantly, come more often.
  • A pleasant, inviting space
This walkway would offer a space where people enjoy walking, stopping, chatting, shopping, discovering, and lingering.
  • The hall would become even more central to the market
This gallery would strengthen the link between the hall and the market. The hall would not only be a symbol, but a living and visible heart of the market.

This covered walkway would help bridge summer, off-seasons, and less favourable days. It’s an essential condition to keep the market – and village life – vibrant over a longer period of the year.

With this third idea, we complete our overall vision: a renovated, open, connected and lively hall that truly helps extend the season in Montalivet.

Together with the previous ideas, we now present a coherent vision:

  • a food hall for sharing and community,
  • a hall open in several directions, now the true centre of the market,
  • and a solid, protective, welcoming covered walkway.

Thus, the 1957 hall would no longer be just a building from the past – but a modern and vibrant engine for the future of the market and of Montalivet.
